Lamjung vs Kaski: Two Regions, Two Roasts
Every KORA roast is tied to a specific place. Not a blend of anonymous lots from wherever coffee happened to be available — a single region, with its own altitude, process and character.
The Bloom and The Ember come from two different parts of Nepal's Annapurna foothills. Here's what actually separates them.
The Bloom — Lamjung
Lamjung is a mountainous district in Nepal's Gandaki province, sitting in the foothills below the Annapurna range.
Elevation: 1,350–1,900 masl
Variety: Arabica
Process: Anaerobic natural
Flavours: Citrus, floral, honey, fermented fruit
The altitude and cool nights here slow cherry ripening, which is a large part of why the cup has the complexity it does. Anaerobic natural processing — where whole cherries ferment in a sealed, oxygen-limited environment before drying — pushes that complexity further, bringing out ripe berry and tropical fruit character.
It's a roast built for filter brewing: V60, Chemex, or your pour-over method of choice, where that fruit and floral character has room to show.
The Ember — Kaski (Dhampus)
Kaski is a smallholder farming area near Dhampus, also in the shadow of the Annapurna range — a different pocket of the same broader region, with a very different result in the cup.
Variety: Bourbon, Caturra, Typica
Process: Washed
Flavours: Caramel, toasted nuts, stone fruit
Washed processing — removing the fruit from the cherry before drying — tends to produce a cleaner, more structured cup than natural processing. Combined with the Bourbon, Caturra and Typica varieties grown here, it gives The Ember the body and balance it needs to hold up in espresso, straight or with milk.
Why the difference matters
Process and origin aren't just technical details — they're the reason two coffees grown in the same broader region of Nepal can taste completely different.
Lamjung's anaerobic natural process is built to be expressive and fruit-forward, best shown through filter brewing. Kaski's washed process is built to be clean and structured, built for espresso.
Neither is a "better" coffee — they're built for different brewing methods and different moods.
Try both
If you can't decide, The Discovery Duo pairs one bag of each so you can taste the difference for yourself.
